Bhubaneswar, Sept 2: India joined the global community in celebrating World Coconut Day today, recognizing the coconut as one of nature’s most versatile and valuable resources. Observed annually on September 2, the day highlights the nutritional, cultural, and economic significance of coconuts across the world.

Often referred to as the “Tree of Life,” the coconut plays a vital role in daily life, from health and wellness to religious rituals and international trade. Rich in essential minerals like potassium, magnesium, and manganese, coconut water is widely consumed as a natural electrolyte drink. Its flesh contains healthy fats that support metabolism and brain function, while coconut oil is valued for its culinary and skincare benefits.

In India, coconuts hold deep religious and cultural importance. They are commonly offered in temples and used in rituals to symbolize purity and prosperity. Breaking a coconut is considered auspicious, often marking new beginnings.

Economically, coconuts support millions of farmers across the country. India is the third-largest producer of coconuts globally, with over 20 billion nuts harvested annually.

India’s coconut exports continue to grow steadily, driven by rising demand for organic and value-added products. The country exports to more than 100 nations, with key markets in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.

This year’s theme, “Sustainable Coconut Farming for a Healthy Future,” emphasizes the importance of eco-friendly agricultural practices and innovation to ensure long-term sustainability of the crop.
