India Brews Success: Surpasses Sri Lanka in Tea Exports

Key Points

A Record 255 Million Kg of Tea Exports Propels India to Global Success.

New Delhi, Mar 27: India has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the world's second-largest exporter of tea, surpassing Sri Lanka.

According to the Tea Board of India, the country exported a record-breaking 255 million kilograms of tea in 2024, marking a 10 percent surge compared to the previous year. The value of these exports jumped over 15 percent to reach ₹7,111 crore, driven by increased global demand and higher tea prices.

Iraq emerged as a significant market, accounting for 20 percent of India’s tea exports, with projections of 40-50 million kilograms to be shipped to the West Asian country in the current fiscal year. Indian exporters have also retained their presence in other West Asian markets, compensating for low Sri Lankan production.

Renowned for Assam, Darjeeling, and Nilgiri teas, India exports to over 25 countries, including the UAE, Russia, the US, and the UK, with black tea constituting 96 percent of the shipments.

The rise of small tea growers, contributing 52 percent of the total production, has further bolstered the industry. Government initiatives, such as the establishment of Self-Help Groups, Farmer Producer Organizations, and mini tea factories, have significantly benefited these growers and empowered entrepreneurs.

Employing 1.16 million workers directly and supporting an equal number indirectly, the tea industry continues to be a pillar of India’s economy, blending tradition with innovation.
