New Delhi, Mar 15: In a move aimed at streamlining domestic gas distribution and preventing misuse, authorities have announced that households will no longer be allowed to maintain dual LPG connections.
In a notification issued yesterday, the Ministry said, any person having a PNG connection will not be allowed to retain a domestic LPG connection or take refills of LPG cylinders from government oil companies or their authorised distributors. Such consumers are also required to surrender their LPG connection immediately.
The order further states that individuals who already have a PNG connection will also not be permitted to obtain a new LPG connection in the future. Oil marketing companies have also been instructed not to issue new LPG connections or provide refills to consumers who already have access to piped natural gas.
The government said, the step has been taken to prevent duplication of cooking gas supply and to ensure that LPG cylinders remain available for households that do not have access to PNG networks.
The notification comes amid disruptions in global fuel supply due to the ongoing crisis in West Asia.
Officials stated that multiple connections under the same household often led to diversion of subsidized cylinders, creating supply imbalances and affecting genuine consumers.
The new policy requires families with more than one connection to voluntarily surrender the extra units. Strict monitoring will be carried out by oil marketing companies to identify duplicate connections using Aadhaar-linked consumer data. Consumers are encouraged to update their records with distributors to avoid penalties.

Those surrendering additional connections will continue to receive uninterrupted supply under the single registered account. The government believes this measure will improve transparency, curb black marketing, and ensure that subsidies reach the intended beneficiaries.
Industry experts also note that the move will help optimize distribution logistics and reduce wastage. Public awareness campaigns are expected to follow, guiding consumers on compliance procedures and highlighting the benefits of the new regulation.
