Fuel Prices Surge Again: Third Hike in 10 Days Amid Global Oil Pressure
“Petrol and Diesel Prices Revised Across India”

Key Points

Petrol and diesel prices hiked for the third time in 10 days, with rates rising up to ₹0.91 per litre amid global crude oil pressure and geopolitical tensions.
New Delhi, May 23: Petrol and diesel prices were increased once again across India on Saturday, marking the third revision in retail fuel rates in just 10 days. The hike comes amid sustained pressure from rising global crude oil prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which continue to impact international energy markets.

According to state-owned oil marketing companies, petrol became costlier by ₹0.87 per litre, while diesel prices rose by ₹0.91 per litre. The latest revision reflects a nationwide adjustment, affecting commuters, transport operators, and businesses already grappling with rising operational costs.

In the national capital, Delhi, petrol prices increased from ₹98.64 to ₹99.51 per litre, while diesel rose from ₹91.58 to ₹92.49 per litre. Kolkata recorded petrol at ₹110.64 per litre and diesel at ₹97.02 per litre. In Mumbai, petrol climbed to ₹108.49 per litre and diesel to ₹95.02 per litre.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reassured citizens that India has adequate fuel supplies and urged the public to avoid panic buying. Officials emphasized that any temporary shortages at select outlets are being addressed through continuous monitoring and coordinated distribution efforts. The ministry further highlighted the importance of responsible consumption and public cooperation to ensure smooth availability during this period of high demand.

This latest hike follows a sharper upward revision on May 16, when petrol and diesel rates rose by around ₹3 per litre in several cities. Experts warn that continued increases may have a cascading effect on the economy, raising transportation and logistics costs and potentially fueling inflationary pressure on essential goods and services.

Government officials maintain that the revisions are necessary to offset rising import costs and ensure stability in fuel supplies amid volatile global crude oil markets. With geopolitical tensions in West Asia showing no signs of easing, analysts predict that fuel prices may remain under pressure in the near term.

The repeated hikes have sparked concern among daily commuters and businesses, who fear that rising costs could further strain household budgets and economic activity.
