Seven labourers in Panna struck fortune after one of them unearthed an 16.96-carat diamond worth ₹30-50 lakh.
Panna, Aug 11: The diamond-rich district of Panna has once again lived up to its reputation, with seven labourers striking fortune after discovering a gem-quality diamond weighing 16.96 carats in Sarkoha village.
The stone, estimated to be worth between ₹30 lakh and ₹50 lakh, has brought immense joy to the families involved.
The discovery was made by Akhilesh Pal, a tea vendor and marginal farmer who also holds a lease for shallow mining. On Monday evening, while inspecting his abandoned mine near his father’s field after recent rains, Pal noticed a glittering stone in the soil. Recognising its value, he immediately deposited it at the Government Diamond Office in Panna, as required by procedure.

Pal had leased the mine in 2024 along with seven partners. Though the group had abandoned the site after prolonged hardship, Pal continued to try his luck. He shared the find with his partners, ensuring the proceeds would be divided equally.

✨Officials confirmed the diamond will be auctioned once a sufficient number of stones are collected, likely in November.
While Pal hopes the gem could fetch up to ₹1 crore, district officers have pegged its value between ₹30-50 lakh. For the partners, the discovery is life-changing. Several of them, including Santosh, Sharman, and Arun, had remained unmarried into their thirties due to financial struggles.
They now hope the auction proceeds will help them marry, build concrete houses to replace thatched huts, and provide better education for their children.
As per rules, royalty and charges will be deducted from the auction amount, with the balance shared equally among the seven partners. The families now await the formal auction, their hopes tied to this rare stroke of fortune.
Panna’s shallow mines have long been known to yield
occasional diamond finds, turning ordinary lives into extraordinary stories of
luck and perseverance.
