Union Health Ministry Launches Fire Safety Week

Key Points

The Union Health Ministry will observe Fire Safety Week from May 4–10, 2026, across healthcare facilities nationwide, focusing on awareness, prevention, and preparedness against fire hazards.
New Delhi, May 3: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has announced the nationwide observance of Fire Safety Week from May 4 to 10, 2026, aimed at strengthening awareness and preparedness against fire hazards in healthcare institutions. The initiative will be carried out in coordination with States, Union Territories, and other Central Ministries, with a strong emphasis on prevention, mitigation, and emergency response mechanisms within hospitals and related facilities.

Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava will inaugurate the week-long campaign at Kartavya Bhawan in New Delhi. As part of the opening ceremony, a nationwide pledge on “Fire Safety in Health Facilities” will be administered, reinforcing adherence to safety protocols and promoting a culture of vigilance across the healthcare sector.

Throughout the week, a series of activities will be conducted across the country. These include awareness campaigns, mock drills, and capacity-building exercises designed to equip healthcare workers and administrators with the knowledge and skills required for fire prevention, emergency handling, and evacuation procedures. The Ministry highlighted that dissemination of fire safety protocols will be a key component, ensuring that healthcare personnel are sensitised to best practices in fire hazard management.

Officials stated that the observance of Fire Safety Week reflects the Health Ministry’s continued commitment to safeguarding patients, healthcare personnel, and critical infrastructure. By promoting robust fire safety systems, the initiative seeks to foster a culture of preparedness and resilience across all levels of the healthcare delivery network.

The campaign comes at a time when fire safety in hospitals has become a pressing concern, with several incidents in recent years underscoring the need for stronger preventive measures. The Ministry’s proactive approach aims to ensure that healthcare facilities nationwide are better equipped to respond to emergencies, thereby protecting lives and vital infrastructure.

By combining awareness, training, and strict adherence to safety norms, Fire Safety Week is expected to serve as a significant step toward building safer healthcare environments across India.
