Farooq Abdullah Hails Islamabad Over Kashmir, BJP Hits Back With ‘Pro-Pakistan’ Charge
BJP Accuses Farooq Abdullah of Echoing Islamabad's Narrative After Pakistan Remarks

Key Points

National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, speaking at a workers' convention in Baramulla, claimed Pakistan's efforts to raise the Kashmir issue at international forums were helping preserve the identity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, saying, "They are protecting us. Otherwise, their (India's) intentions are not right."

New Delhi, Oct 24: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has triggered a political storm by crediting Pakistan with “protecting” Kashmiris and questioning the Indian government’s intentions towards the region, drawing a sharp rebuke from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), whose leaders accused him of echoing Islamabad’s narrative while overlooking Pakistan’s role in cross-border terrorism.

Speaking at a workers’ convention in Baramulla, Abdullah claimed that Pakistan’s efforts to raise the Kashmir issue at international forums were helping preserve the identity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“They (the Indian state) are silent today due to pressure from the world. Our neighbour (Pakistan) goes everywhere and says that the Kashmir issue has not been resolved. They are protecting us. Otherwise, their (India’s) intentions are not right,” Abdullah said in Hindi.

His remarks drew fierce criticism from BJP leaders, who questioned how a senior political figure could portray Pakistan as a protector of Kashmiris despite India’s longstanding accusations that Islamabad supports cross-border terrorism in the region.

BJP national spokesperson RP Singh challenged Abdullah to look across the border and assess the condition of Kashmiris living in Pakistan-administered territory. He argued that the abrogation of Article 370 had helped integrate Jammu and Kashmir more fully with India and pointed to tourism as an indicator of economic activity in the region.

“Kashmir is doing well here because Article 370 was abrogated and Kashmir was fully integrated with India. That’s why two crore tourists visit Kashmir (every year). That’s why Kashmir is doing economically well,” Singh said.
