Maharashtra, Apr 13: India bid farewell to Asha Bhosle, one of Bollywood’s most iconic voices, who passed away on April 12, 2026, at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital following a cardiac arrest. She was 92. Her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle confirmed that the singer had been battling a chest infection and extreme exhaustion. Her last rites will be held at Shivaji Park, where fans and members of the film industry are expected to gather in large numbers to pay their respects.

In recognition of her unparalleled contribution to Indian music, the Maharashtra government has announced a memorial initiative to honor Asha Bhosle. The move underscores her stature as a cultural icon whose voice defined generations of Bollywood music.

Asha Bhosle’s extraordinary journey began at the age of 10 with the Marathi film Majha Bal, singing “Chala Chala Nav Bala.” She entered Hindi cinema with Saawan Aaya from Chunariya and recorded her first Hindi solo for Raat Ki Rani. Over the decades, she became one of the most versatile playback singers in Indian cinema, effortlessly traversing genres from cabaret numbers to soulful ghazals.

Her career featured unforgettable songs from films like Umrao Jaan, Teesri Manzil, Don, Caravan, and Rangeela. In the 1980s, she silenced critics with her ghazals in Umrao Jaan, winning her first National Award, followed by Mera Kuch Saamaan in Ijazat, which earned her another.

Even in her later years, Asha remained a vibrant performer. She recently made headlines for dancing to Tauba Tauba from Bad Newz during a concert in Dubai, a moment that went viral and endeared her to younger audiences.

With a career spanning over seven decades and thousands of songs, Asha Bhosle leaves behind an unmatched legacy. Her voice, versatility, and enduring passion for music have left an indelible mark on Indian cinema, ensuring she will be remembered as Bollywood’s Melody Queen for generations to come.
