Exit Polls Predict BJP Sweep in Assam, Congress Trails
Exit Polls Show BJP Ahead in Assam 2026

Key Points

Exit polls for the Assam Assembly elections 2026 project a sweeping victory for BJP, with 85–100 seats, while Congress is expected to trail at 20–35 seats. The ruling party is seen improving its 2021 tally, with pollsters citing AIUDF’s decline as a key factor.
New Delhi, Apr 29: Exit polls released on Wednesday suggest that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to secure a decisive victory in the Assam Assembly elections 2026, returning to power with an enhanced majority under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Several pollsters have projected a commanding performance by the BJP, with estimates ranging between 85 and 100 seats in the 126-member Assembly.

According to Axis My India, the BJP is expected to clinch 88–100 seats, while the Congress is projected to win 24–36 seats, reflecting its inability to mount a strong challenge. Poll Diary’s projections are even more emphatic, placing BJP’s tally between 86 and 121 seats, while Congress is seen struggling with 15–25 seats. Matrize Exit Polls also put BJP in a dominant position, predicting 85–95 seats, with Congress trailing at 25–32 seats.

The exit polls indicate that BJP could improve its performance significantly compared to the 2021 Assembly elections, when it won 60 seats. Congress, which secured 29 seats in 2021, appears to be losing ground, with its projected tally dropping sharply. Analysts attribute BJP’s strong showing to a bipolar contest between the two national parties and the decline of regional player AIUDF, which has traditionally held sway in parts of Assam.

In terms of vote share, BJP is expected to lead Congress by about 10 percentage points, consolidating its position as the dominant political force in the state. The ruling party’s campaign, led by Sarma, focused on development, stability, and national security, while Congress attempted to counter with promises of welfare and regional representation.

Despite Congress mounting a high-octane campaign, the exit polls suggest that voters have largely favored BJP, reinforcing its grip on Assam’s political landscape. The projections also highlight the party’s ability to expand its base and secure additional seats compared to its previous performance.

While exit polls provide an early indication of trends, the final outcome will only be known when votes are counted. Official results for the Assam Assembly elections are scheduled to be declared on May 4.
