Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Hits Back At Stalin On NEP, Calls 'Imposition' Narrative 'Tired Attempt'
Stalin's Claims Create Barriers For Students, Says Dharmendra Pradhan

Key Points

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan strongly countered MK Stalin's criticism of NEP 2020, calling the "imposition" narrative a "tired attempt" to mask political failures.
New Delhi, Apr 4: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday strongly countered Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin over his criticism of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, calling the “imposition” narrative a “tired attempt” to mask political failures.

What Stalin Had Said
In a sharp response earlier, Stalin had alleged that the new CBSE curriculum framework aligned with NEP 2020 is a “calculated attempt at linguistic imposition,” claiming it disproportionately favours Hindi and burdens non-Hindi speaking states without ensuring reciprocity.

Pradhan Defends NEP

In a detailed post on 'X', Pradhan asserted that NEP 2020 is a “manifesto for linguistic liberation,” emphasising that it prioritises mother tongue education and empowers students to become multilingual.

He accused Stalin of misrepresenting the policy as “compulsory Hindi,” stating that such claims create barriers for students and deny them opportunities to become “multilingual global leaders.”

“Portraying multilingualism as a threat is misplaced. Tamil is not weakened by learning additional languages; it is enriched,” Pradhan wrote.

Minister Accuses DMK Govt
The Union Minister alleged that the DMK government has stalled major education initiatives, including PM SHRI schools, by refusing to sign required MoUs despite prior commitments.

He further claimed that the state has obstructed the implementation of Navodaya Vidyalayas, even after directions from the Supreme Court of India, calling it a “disservice” to underprivileged students.

“This has effectively withheld modern infrastructure and teachers from its own students,” he wrote, adding that the Centre remains committed to funding and teacher training.
Highlights Centre’s Push For Indian Languages
Pradhan further pointed to initiatives under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, such as the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, to underline efforts to promote Tamil globally.

He said the NEP promotes all Indian languages equally and addresses limitations of the existing two-language system through structured reforms, including teacher training and institutional strengthening.

"It further focuses on implementation through initiatives such as Samagra Shiksha, teacher training, and strengthening institutions, like DIETs, along with national frameworks, such as NPST and NMM," the minister wrote on 'X'.

Calls ‘Hindi Imposition’ Narrative Misleading

Terming Stalin’s remarks “dishonest politics,” Pradhan said the “Hindi imposition” argument is being used to create confusion and fear.

He urged the Tamil Nadu government to move beyond “divisive vote-bank narratives” and join what he described as a national mission to empower all Indian languages.
