Key Points

Victim’s father demands CBI investigation citing doubts over police probe.

NCW report exposes serious lapses in crime scene handling and forensics.

Six arrests made, including victim’s male friend; police seek further custody.

Kolkata, Oct 15: In a significant development in the Durgapur gang-rape case, the father of the victim on Wednesday called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, citing concerns over the integrity and thoroughness of the ongoing police investigation.

The incident, which occurred last Friday, involved the gang-rape of a second-year medical student from Odisha in a forested area near a private medical college in West Bengal’s Durgapur. The victim had reportedly gone out with a male friend, Wasif Ali, who is now among the six individuals arrested in connection with the case.

Speaking to media persons, the victim’s father expressed his dissatisfaction with the current investigation, stating, “Exemplary punishment should be given. If there is a CBI investigation, the culprits will be punished quickly.” He emphasized that while the police have made progress, doubts remain about procedural lapses and potential evidence tampering.

His demand comes in the wake of a damning fact-finding report by the National Commission for Women (NCW), which flagged “gross negligence” by West Bengal Police. The report noted that the crime scene remained unsecured even days after the incident, and no proper forensic examination had been conducted, raising serious concerns about the preservation of crucial evidence.

Commissioner of Police Sunil Choudhary responded by assuring that the victim’s family is being supported and that the investigation is moving in the right direction. However, the arrest of Wasif Ali, the victim’s companion on the night of the crime, has added complexity to the case. Police cited inconsistencies in his statements during interrogation as grounds for his detention.

The remaining five accused are currently in police custody, and further legal proceedings are underway. The victim’s family continues to seek justice, hoping that a central agency’s involvement will expedite the process and ensure accountability.
