Bhubaneswar, Oct 31: The depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a deep depression by midnight on Saturday, develop into a cyclonic storm on November 1 and further strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by November 2, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast today.

If the depression intensifies into a cyclone as predicted, it will be called ‘Murasu’, a name contributed by India.

The system is likely to reach the west-central Bay of Bengal near the south Andhra Pradesh coast by the early hours of November 3 and cross the coast as a severe cyclonic storm by the morning, with wind speeds of 100-110 kmph and gusts reaching 120 kmph.

According to the IMD's latest bulletin, the depression moved west-northwestwards at a speed of 30 kmph during the past six hours and lay over the southeast Bay of Bengal at 5:30 pm on October 31. The system was located approximately 960 km east-southeast of Chennai, 980 km southeast of Visakhapatnam, 1,030 km southeast of Machilipatnam and 1,080 km east-southeast of Ongole.

The IMD said the system is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal by midnight on October 31. It is then expected to become a cyclonic storm over the same region on November 1 before strengthening into a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal on November 2.

The severe cyclonic storm is likely to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur on the morning of November 3.

Cyclone to be named 'Murasu'
If the depression intensifies into a cyclonic storm, it will be named Murasu, a name contributed by India to the list of tropical cyclone names for the North Indian Ocean.

Murasu means an ancient musical instrument, a drum traditionally used to disseminate information and alert people, including during natural disasters. It would be the second cyclonic storm to form over the Bay of Bengal this year, following Cyclone Arnab.

The naming of tropical cyclones over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea is governed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)/United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Panel on Tropical Cyclones. The naming system began in 2004 and was subsequently expanded as more countries joined the panel.
