False Claims / Consumer Court Slams EV Firm over False Claims as Kerala Consumer Compensated ₹1.70 Lakh

Key Points
A Kerala consumer wins ₹1.70 lakh compensation after his electric scooter, advertised with an 85 km range, delivered only 16 km. Court finds manufacturing defects and poor service.
Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 5: Amid rising fuel prices driven by global conflicts, many Indians are turning to electric vehicles (EVs) as a cost‑effective alternative.
However, the booming EV two‑wheeler segment has also seen growing consumer dissatisfaction, with a recent case in Kerala highlighting the issue.
A customer purchased an electric scooter in 2022 for ₹88,000, lured by the company’s claim that a full six‑hour charge would deliver a range of 85 km. Instead, the scooter managed only 16 km before stalling. Despite repeated battery replacements, the problem persisted, leaving the buyer frustrated.

✨After complaints to the company yielded no solution, the customer approached the consumer court. The court took the matter seriously, ordering the EV manufacturer to compensate the buyer ₹1.70 lakh. This included the scooter’s purchase price of ₹88,000, an additional ₹55,000 for expenses, and ₹25,000 towards litigation costs.
Investigations revealed manufacturing defects in the scooter, including a faulty battery and wheel issues. The court noted that the company had consistently provided poor service and attempted to deflect blame by citing the customer’s weight, driving style, and road conditions.
However, these claims were not supported by evidence.
The judgment underscored the importance of accountability in
India’s fast‑growing EV market. While electric mobility offers a
sustainable and economical solution, consumer trust depends on manufacturers
delivering reliable products.
