New Delhi, Feb 18: Gyanesh Kumar appointed as CEC: Gyanesh Kumar has been appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), which is a very important position responsible for overseeing elections in India. He played a significant role in what happened after Article 370 was removed in 2019. Article 370 gave special status to the region of Jammu & Kashmir. When it was removed, the region was divided into two Union Territories: Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh. Before becoming the CEC, Gyanesh Kumar worked as an additional secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs between 2018 and 2021. He was involved in important government decisions during that time. Gyanesh Kumar is a highly experienced official who now leads India's election commission, and he played a key role in a major political change involving Jammu & Kashmir.
Gyanesh Kumar's Role in Important Bills: Gyanesh Kumar was also given the responsibility to formulate the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill by the Narendra Modi government. Kumar is the first CEC to be appointed under a new law on the appointment of the members of the Election Commission (EC).
His term will run till January 26, 2029, days before the EC is expected to announce the schedule of the next Lok Sabha election.

✨Gyanesh Kumar is a 1988-batch Kerala-cadre IAS officer.
He completed his B.Tech in Civil Engineering from IIT Kanpur, later studied business finance at ICFAI, and environmental economics at Harvard University.
Gyanesh Kumar has worked in the government of Kerala as the assistant collector of Ernakulam, sub-collector of Adoor, managing director of the Kerala state development corporation for SC/ST, municipal commissioner of the Corporation of Cochin, besides holding other posts.
He also worked in the Indian government in key roles like joint secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, and secretary in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Ministry of Cooperation. He retired in January 2024.
