The initiative, part of the Chennai Intelligent Transport System project, aims to modernise public transport and enhance passenger safety.
Chennai, May 14: Chennai commuters are likely to get a major upgrade in public transport convenience as the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) prepares to roll out a new real-time bus-tracking mobile application along with smart passenger information display systems across the city.

The upcoming MTC Chennai app is being introduced under the Chennai Intelligent Transport System (CITS) project and aims to provide passengers with accurate live updates on bus locations and arrival timings.

Officials said the app has been redesigned with a more user-friendly interface to improve accessibility for all commuters, including senior citizens and differently abled passengers.

Passengers will be able to track various categories of buses, including ordinary, express, deluxe, low-floor and electric AC services, by simply entering the route number.

The application will also feature a nearby bus stops option that allow users to locate the closest boarding points and check buses arriving at upcoming stops in real time.

In a significant move aimed at improving passenger safety, especially for women commuters, the app will include an SOS emergency feature.

The system is expected to help users quickly share their live location and alert emergency contacts or authorities during distress situations.

Apart from the mobile applications, digital passenger information display boards are also being installed at bus stops in different parts of Chennai.
