Annual recognition on National Science Day and Sarabhai’s birth anniversary

Aimed at boosting India’s scientific culture and global research impact

New Delhi, Oct 25: In a landmark move to celebrate and elevate India’s scientific community, the Government of India has announced the launch of the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar (RVP) — a national award dedicated to recognizing exceptional contributions in science, technology, and innovation, officials said on Saturday.

A New Era of Recognition

The RVP aims to foster a culture of research and innovation by honouring individuals and teams who have made significant strides across scientific disciplines. This initiative complements existing awards like the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and expands recognition to a broader spectrum of contributors.

Four Distinct Categories

The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar will be conferred in four categories:

Vigyan Ratna: For lifetime achievement in science and technology

Vigyan Shri: For distinguished contributions

These awards will span disciplines including physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, engineering, and earth sciences. A committee of eminent scientists and technologists will oversee the selection process.

Annual Timeline and Presentation
The awards will be announced every year on National Science Day (February 28) and formally presented on August 23, commemorating the birth anniversary of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the father of India’s space program.

Boosting India’s Global Scientific Standing This initiative aligns with India’s broader mission to promote scientific excellence and enhance global competitiveness in research. It is expected to inspire young minds, reward innovation, and strengthen India’s position as a global leader in science and technology.
