New Delhi, Oct 25: In a landmark move to celebrate and elevate India’s scientific community, the Government of India has announced the launch of the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar (RVP) — a national award dedicated to recognizing exceptional contributions in science, technology, and innovation, officials said on Saturday.
A New Era of Recognition
The RVP aims to foster a culture of research and innovation by honouring individuals and teams who have made significant strides across scientific disciplines. This initiative complements existing awards like the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and expands recognition to a broader spectrum of contributors.
Four Distinct Categories
The Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar will be conferred in four categories:
• Vigyan Ratna: For lifetime achievement in science and technology
• Vigyan Shri: For distinguished contributions

• Vigyan Team: For collaborative scientific efforts
These awards will span disciplines including physics,
chemistry, biology, mathematics, engineering, and earth sciences. A committee
of eminent scientists and technologists will oversee the selection process.
Annual Timeline and Presentation
The awards will be
announced every year on National Science Day (February 28) and formally
presented on August 23, commemorating the birth anniversary of Dr. Vikram
Sarabhai, the father of India’s space program.
