Belagavi Family Welcomes Baby Girl with Festive Procession

Key Points

  • A family in Belagavi district of Karnataka celebrated the birth of a baby girl with a grand procession, challenging traditional norms and spreading a strong social message on gender equality.

  • Belagavi/ Karnataka, Apr 28: In a heartwarming and symbolic gesture, a family in Barwad village of Belagavi district celebrated the birth of a baby girl with a grand public procession, drawing widespread attention and admiration. The initiative, led by social worker Sambhaji Thorwat and his wife Suman Thorwat, was aimed at challenging deep‑rooted societal biases that often undervalue daughters.

The newborn, named Vaibhavi, was welcomed home in a festive procession that began at the Lakshmi Temple in Ganganagar. The event was marked by traditional music, fireworks, flower showers, and the distribution of sweets. The rhythmic beats of halgi, ghumke, and zhanj accompanied the procession, while streets were decorated with rangoli. Residents joined in enthusiastically, showering petals on the mother and child.

Initially, many assumed the celebration was for the birth of a boy. However, when it was revealed that the festivities honoured a girl child, onlookers expressed surprise and admiration. Several locals joined the procession in solidarity, praising the family’s effort to break stereotypes and promote equality.

Following the ceremonial ‘gruhapravesh’, jalebis were distributed across the neighbourhood as a mark of joy. Grandmother Suman Thorwat described the baby’s arrival as akin to Goddess Mahalakshmi entering their home, symbolizing prosperity and blessings. The family emphasized that daughters should be valued equally, noting that in a country where goddesses like Mahalakshmi, Durga, and Bharat Mata are revered, girl children must also be welcomed with pride.

Speaking on the occasion, Sambhaji Thorwat highlighted the pressing issue of female feticide and the need to change mindsets. He stressed that with proper education and values, daughters can become role models for future generations. The family’s initiative was intended to inspire society to celebrate the birth of girls with the same enthusiasm traditionally reserved for boys.

Their gesture resonated across the community, sparking conversations about gender bias and the importance of valuing daughters.

This unique celebration stands as a reminder that change begins at home, and small acts of courage can inspire broader societal transformation.
