New Delhi, May 30: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan formally bid farewell to military service on Saturday, marking the end of a distinguished career spanning more than four decades.
The ceremonial Guard of Honour at South Block lawns in New Delhi symbolised the culmination of his tenure as India’s highest-ranking military officer. Following the ceremony, General Chauhan paid his final tribute in uniform at the National War Memorial, laying a wreath in honour of soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
Speaking to the Media, the outgoing CDS described his tenure as “very satisfying and excellent,” expressing gratitude to the three services and Headquarters IDS for the honour of a Tri-Services Guard of Honour. “With the conclusion of the Guard of Honour, I bid farewell to my colleagues in uniform, comrades in arms forever,” he said.
Commissioned into the Indian Army in 1981, General Chauhan served in several key command, operational, and staff appointments. His leadership was recognised with prestigious military decorations including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.

During his tenure as CDS, he spearheaded reforms to enhance jointness and integration among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, strengthening inter-service cooperation and operational effectiveness. His extended tenure, approved in September 2025, allowed him to serve until May 30, 2026.
The farewell ceremony not only marked the end of his official duties but also highlighted his transition from uniform to civilian life. Friends, relatives, and well-wishers joined him in celebrating a career that shaped India’s defence strategy and left a lasting legacy in the Armed Forces.
