New Delhi, Oct 6: Bypolls to five Assembly constituencies across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, along with the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam, began on Tuesday. The votes are scheduled to be counted and the results declared on October 9.

Polling is being held in Nandigram and Rejinagar in West Bengal, Madurantakam and Dharapuram in Tamil Nadu, and Thattanchavady in Puducherry. The Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency in Assam is also going to the polls.

Assam's Nagaon Parliamentary constituency fell vacant due to the resignation of Pradyut Bordoloi, a statement issued by the ECI said.

In West Bengal, bye-elections will be held in Nandigram Assembly seat due to the resignation of the current Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, and Rejinagar seat, which had fallen vacant after the resignation of Aam Janata Unnayan Party Chief Humayun Kabir.

Earlier on Sunday, Chief Minister Adhikari took out a foot march in Nandigram for BJP candidate Hasirani Rath, mother of Chandranath Rath, a former aide of Adhikari who was killed shortly after the Assembly election victory.

In Tamil Nadu, by-elections in the Assembly will be held in Madurantakam and Dharapuram. By-elections will also be held in Puducherry's Thattanchavady constituency.

According to the schedule issued by the ECI, the gazette notification for the by-elections will be issued on September 9.

The ECI earlier said that it has decided to use EVMs and VVPATs in the by-election in all the polling stations.

Adequate numbers of EVMs and VVPATs have been made available, and all steps have been taken to ensure that the poll is conducted smoothly with the help of these machines, the statement said.

According to the Commission, the process of updating electoral rolls in the four states continued till the last date of filing nominations

The Election Commission of India (ECI) had earlier said candidates with criminal antecedents were required to publish details of their criminal background in newspapers and through television channels on three occasions during the election campaign.

Political parties fielding candidates with criminal antecedents were also required to publish information about their candidates’ criminal records on their websites, as well as in newspapers and through television channels on three occasions, the ECI said in a statement.
