Key Points
Meerut, Oct 14: A court in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut on Wednesday sentenced a woman and her lover to death for the murder of her husband, whose dismembered body was later stuffed into a blue plastic drum in a case that had shocked the country.
District Judge Arvind Kumar pronounced the death sentence for Muskan Rastogi and Sahil Shukla after a trial that lasted nearly one and a half years. Both convicts appeared before the court via video conferencing from jail and reportedly remained silent during the proceedings.
The case had drawn widespread attention after investigators uncovered allegations that the victim was murdered and his body was dismembered before being concealed inside a drum in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence and evade detection.
During the course of the trial, the prosecution presented a range of evidence before the court. As many as 22 witnesses were examined, including individuals who had allegedly sold the drum, knife and medicines linked to the crime. The testimonies and material evidence formed a key part of the prosecution's case against the accused.
