New Delhi, Jul 23: India's first bullet train is targeted to begin passenger operations from August 15, 2027, with electrification work gathering pace on the 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, according to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL).

The NHSRCL recently released a video showcasing overhead electrification on a nearly completed section of the corridor in Gujarat, marking another milestone in India's first high-speed rail project.

Passenger Services Targeted From Aug 15, 2027
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said the first phase of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is targeted to begin passenger operations on August 15, 2027.

Trial runs are also expected to begin on a section of the Gujarat corridor before commercial services commence.

How Fast Will India's Bullet Train Be?
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train will have a maximum speed of 320 kmph, making it India's fastest passenger train.

For perspective, a train travelling at 320 kmph covers about 5.3 km every minute, 32 km in six minutes, or roughly 53 km in 10 minutes.

The fastest services are expected to complete the journey between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in around two hours, significantly reducing travel time compared with existing trains.

The project is based on Japan's Shinkansen high-speed rail technology, renowned for its speed, safety and punctuality.

Latest Electrification Work Explained
Electrification is progressing rapidly along the corridor.

The route is being equipped with an advanced 2×25 kV overhead traction system, designed to provide uninterrupted power to trains travelling at speeds of up to 320 kmph.


NHSRCL said the train will draw electricity from the national power grid through 14 traction substations.

Five substations are located in Maharashtra -- Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar and Thane Depot -- while nine are located in Gujarat at Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Mahemdabad, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati Depot.

The project will also include 31 switching posts to ensure uninterrupted power supply and isolate faults quickly whenever required.

'Make In India' Gets A Boost
Several key components of the electrification system are now being manufactured domestically under the 'Make in India' initiative.

These include transformers, overhead equipment, feeder wires, ground wires and protection wires, reducing import dependence while strengthening India's high-speed rail manufacturing ecosystem.

Advanced Earthquake Safety System
Safety remains one of the project's biggest features.

A total of 28 seismometers are being installed -- 22 along the corridor and six in earthquake-prone areas of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

These sensors can detect seismic activity within seconds and automatically trigger safety measures, including stopping trains if required.
