Deepotsav 2026 in Ayodhya will blend Ramayana storytelling with projection mapping, laser shows, drone performances and AR experiences, creating an immersive celebration that connects tradition with next-generation technology.

Ayodhya, Nov 3: Under the glow of countless diyas and the shimmer of digital projections, Ayodhya's iconic Deepotsav is preparing for a dramatic transformation.

This year's festivities will combine traditional Ramayana storytelling with advanced visual effects, laser displays, drone-based performances and mobile-enabled augmented reality, creating a grand cultural experience that bridges the gap between timeless faith and modern innovation.

Scheduled around Diwali festivities, the celebrations are being organised by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, which is transforming Ram Ki Paidi into the focal point of a week-long cultural and technological showcase.

The initiative seeks not only to celebrate Ayodhya's religious and cultural heritage but also to reinterpret it through contemporary storytelling techniques capable of resonating with younger audiences.

At the heart of the programme will be a specially designed 28-minute spectacle on November 7. The presentation will recreate the homecoming of Lord Ram following his exile, employing large-scale projection mapping, synchronised lighting effects, laser displays, music and live performances to create an immersive visual narrative.

More than 100 artists will participate in the production, portraying key episodes from the Ramayana through a fusion of folk traditions, classical dance forms and theatrical performances.

To host the grand production, a floating stage is being constructed on the waters of Ram Ki Paidi. The unique venue will serve as the setting for live performances, enhanced by advanced sound systems, outdoor LED walls and sophisticated visual technologies.

The combination of traditional artistic expression and modern audiovisual effects is expected to offer visitors a multi-sensory experience unlike previous editions of the event.

Explaining the vision behind this year's celebrations, Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said the programmes have been conceptualised specifically to appeal to younger audiences.

"This year's Deepotsav programmes had been specially designed keeping in mind the interests and preferences of Gen Z."

The minister said the objective is to familiarise the younger generation with Ayodhya's rich heritage and the story of Lord Ram through innovative formats that merge cultural education with entertainment.

"The idea is to introduce the younger generation to Ayodhya's rich cultural heritage and the story of Lord Ram through the use of modern technology and innovative forms of storytelling."

One of the most significant innovations this year will be the introduction of an application-based Augmented Reality (AR) experience. Visitors at Ram Ki Paidi will be able to download a dedicated mobile application and access interactive Ramayana-themed content directly on their smartphones.

Using geo-fencing technology, the feature will function exclusively within designated areas of Ram Ki Paidi. Visitors can scan specific locations to view 3D scenes from five episodes of the Ramayana superimposed on their real-world surroundings.

The technology will allow users to watch mythological narratives unfold against the actual landscape of Ayodhya, creating an engaging blend of physical and digital experiences.

The application will also enable visitors to record the augmented reality visuals and share their experiences on social media platforms, expanding the reach of the celebrations beyond the event venue.

The Deepotsav festivities will extend over several days. Multimedia projection shows and laser displays will be organised from November 5 to November 9.

Two trial shows are scheduled for November 5, followed by a full-scale rehearsal on November 6 to test all technical and performance components before the main event.

The principal presentation on November 7 will take place in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. To accommodate larger audiences, three additional public shows will also be organised. On November 8, coinciding with Diwali, four more performances are planned, though these shows will exclude the dance segments featured in the main production.

The celebrations will conclude with a special drone show on November 9, designed particularly for the residents of Ayodhya and expected to serve as another major attraction of the festival.

Alongside the headline presentation, visitors will witness an eight-minute laser show and an independent 20-minute multimedia projection-mapping display. These supplementary attractions are intended to enrich the overall programme and provide audiences with multiple opportunities to experience the technological dimensions of the event.

According to officials, the entire presentation has been developed through an integrated approach that combines storytelling, narration, dance, music, voice-overs, visual effects and elaborate lighting design.

Organisers hope the format will bridge the gap between traditional cultural practices and modern entertainment expectations while preserving the essence of the Ramayana.

Additional Chief Secretary of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Religious Affairs, Amrit Abhijat, said the fusion of heritage and innovation would help establish a deeper connection between younger audiences and Ayodhya's cultural legacy.

"The combination of tradition and technology at Deepotsav would help establish a connection between Ayodhya's cultural legacy and the younger generation."

He described the programme as an effort to present the city's heritage through formats that appeal to contemporary audiences without diluting its traditional character.

"Technologies such as projection mapping, laser shows, aerial performances and augmented reality would offer a fresh and innovative way of presenting the story of Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya."

Officials also believe the event will strengthen the state's 'Visit My State' campaign by showcasing Ayodhya's cultural attractions and encouraging greater tourism.

With an expansive schedule of live performances, immersive digital experiences and spectacular visual displays, Deepotsav 2026 is poised to present Ayodhya's timeless narrative in a modern format. By combining ancient traditions with emerging technologies, the festival aims to create a memorable celebration that speaks to both devotees and the digital generation alike.
