  • New Delhi, Mar 15:The Election Commission on Sunday announced the schedule for assembly elections in four states and one Union Territory, triggering the immediate enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) across all five regions.

    According to the schedule, voting in West Bengal will be held on April 23 and 29, while Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and the Union Territory of Puducherry will go to the polls on April 9. Counting of votes for all five regions is scheduled for May 4.

    What is the Model Code Of Conduct?
    The Model Code of Conduct is a set of guidelines issued by the Election Commission to regulate the behaviour of political parties and candidates during elections. Its aim is to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections. The MCC comes into effect immediately after the election schedule is announced and remains active until the electoral process concludes.

    Key Guidelines Under Model Code of Conduct (MCC)
    No appeals to religion, caste, or communal sentiments during campaigning.
    Criticism of opponents must focus on policies and performance, not personal lives.
    Bribery, intimidation, impersonation, and campaigning near polling stations are prohibited.
    Political parties must inform authorities about rallies, meetings, and processions in advance.
    Loudspeakers and public gatherings require official permission.
    Processions must follow approved routes and timings.
    Government machinery, funds, or official positions cannot be used for election campaigning.
    Government facilities must be equally available to all parties.
    Parties and candidates must cooperate with election officials to ensure fair polling.

    The Election Commission has urged all political parties and candidates to strictly adhere to the MCC to ensure transparent and fair elections in the upcoming polls.
