Thrissur (Kerala): Thrissur police have uncovered a shocking case of matricide after a 75-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her daughter and her partner over a gold chain.

The incident took place in Mundoor, where neighbours discovered the body of the elderly woman, Thankamani, behind her home early Sunday morning.

Initially, police suspected that Thankamani had died from a fall, as she bore injury marks on her face. However, the post-mortem confirmed it was a homicide, prompting investigators to dig deeper. Neighbours told police that Thankamani was rarely seen without her gold chain, which was missing when her body was found. This clue became the turning point in the investigation.

The police questioned her daughter, Sandhya (45), who had been living with her mother after separating from her husband. Investigations revealed that Sandhya was in a relationship with Nithin, a 29-year-old local resident. During interrogation, Sandhya admitted that she wanted to help Nithin financially and asked her mother for the chain. When Thankamani refused, a heated argument escalated into a violent scuffle.

According to police, Sandhya allegedly grabbed her mother’s throat and pushed her, causing Thankamani to fall and fatally hit her head on the ground. In an attempt to cover up the crime, Sandhya and Nithin tried to portray the death as an accidental one, feigning ignorance when neighbours discovered the body.

The missing chain, however, raised suspicions and led investigators to press harder. Under questioning, both Sandhya and Nithin confessed to their involvement. They have since been taken into custody, and further investigation is underway.
