Odisha Media Delegation Visits Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute Of Mountaineering In Manali

Odisha media delegation visited Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS) in Manali, learning about adventure training and skill development.
Manali, Mar 26: The Odisha media delegation continued its exposure visit to Himachal Pradesh with a visit to the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, gaining detailed insights into adventure training and skill development initiatives.

Inside India’s Premier Adventure Training Hub
Officials informed that the institute, established on September 16, 1961, under the Department of Youth Services and Sports, Government of Himachal Pradesh, is among India’s leading adventure training centres.

Formerly known as the Western Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, ABVIMAS offers a wide range of programmes including mountaineering, skiing, trekking, water sports, aero sports, mountain biking, and disaster management training.

So far, the institute has trained over two lakh individuals across various disciplines.

Extensive Network Across Himachal

The delegation was also briefed on ABVIMAS’ wide institutional network across the state, with regional centres located in Dharamshala, Pong Dam, Narkanda, Hatkoti, Jispa, Bharmour, Bilaspur, Solang Valley, Pirdi and Bir Billing.

These centres conduct specialised courses such as basic and advanced mountaineering, skiing, river rafting, paragliding, trekking guide programmes, and adventure camps, aimed at promoting youth engagement and boosting adventure tourism.

Focus on Safety, Rescue & Skill Development
Officials highlighted that the institute also runs specialised programmes in search and rescue operations, disaster management, and expedition-based learning, contributing significantly to capacity building and safety awareness in mountainous terrains.

The institute plays a key role in promoting adventure sports while supporting tourism and livelihood opportunities in the region.

On-Ground Exposure to Training Ecosystem
During the visit, the delegation toured training infrastructure and equipment facilities and interacted with instructors to gain firsthand knowledge of the institute’s functioning and methodologies.

Tour Concludes with Key Institutional Visits

The visit marked the conclusion of the delegation’s sixth day in Himachal Pradesh, during which they explored several key institutions, including the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute, ARTRAC, and Rashtrapati Niwas in Shimla.

The team also reviewed infrastructure projects undertaken by NHAI and the Border Roads Organisation, including the iconic Atal Tunnel, and called on the Governor of Himachal Pradesh.

Officials Accompany Delegation
Manoj Kumar Jali, Deputy Director, and Swadhin Shakti Prasad, Media & Communication Officer, PIB Bhubaneswar, accompanied the delegation of senior journalists throughout the visit.
