Key Points
India’s domestic LPG supply remains steady despite global uncertainties, with sales of 5kg cylinders reaching 14.3 lakh and PNG connections crossing 4.4 lakh. The government has assured citizens of adequate fuel stocks and urged reliance on digital booking platforms to prevent panic buying.
New Delhi, April 14: India’s domestic LPG supply continues to remain stable, with demand for smaller 5kg cylinders witnessing a sharp rise. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, over 1.1 lakh of these cylinders, primarily used by migrant labourers for cooking, were sold on Monday alone, taking the cumulative figure to 14.3 lakh since March 23. The daily average has climbed from 77,000 in February to 1.1 lakh in April, reflecting increased reliance on portable fuel options amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Online LPG bookings have surged to 98 percent across the industry, while deliveries authenticated through DAC codes on registered mobile numbers have reached 92 per cent, helping curb diversion at the distributor level.
Parallel to LPG sales, piped natural gas (PNG) connections have also expanded significantly. Since March 2026, about 4.4 lakh PNG connections have been gasified, with nearly 4.88 lakh new customers registering for connections. Interestingly, more than 33,000 PNG consumers have surrendered their LPG connections via the MYPNGD.in platform, signaling a shift toward cleaner and more convenient fuel options.
Commercial LPG demand has also remained strong, with sales equivalent to over 4.5 lakh 19kg cylinders recorded on Monday, pushing the total past 69.28 lakh since March 14. A three‑member committee comprising Executive Directors from IOCL, HPCL, and BPCL is coordinating with state authorities to ensure smooth distribution.
The government has urged citizens to avoid panic purchases of petrol, diesel, and LPG, emphasising that refineries are operating at high capacity with sufficient crude inventories. Enforcement actions against hoarding and black marketing continue, with penalties imposed on 232 LPG distributorships and 56 suspended.
To support industrial demand, the government has extended the increase in commercial LPG limits to 70 percent of pre‑March 2026 consumption levels for sectors including pharma, food, steel, ceramics, and packaging.
Despite global uncertainties, India’s fuel supply chain remains resilient, with a clear focus on ensuring availability for households, hospitals, and educational institutions.
