Imphal, Apr 21: A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Manipur early Tuesday morning, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties, officials said.

According to the National Center for Seismology, the tremor occurred at around 5:59 am IST on April 21, with its epicentre located in Kamjong district at a depth of 62 kilometres.

“EQ of M: 5.2… Depth: 62 Km, Location: Kamjong, Manipur,” the agency said in a post on X.
Tremors were felt in neighbouring Ukhrul district, the state capital Imphal, and parts of Meghalaya. Residents reported moderate shaking, with some saying the early morning tremors were strong enough to wake them from sleep.

Officials said there were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

Unrest Continues in State
The quake comes amid ongoing unrest in Manipur, where shutdowns and protests have disrupted normal life across several districts.

Schools, colleges, and markets remained closed on Monday in valley districts dominated by the Meitei community, as well as in Naga-inhabited areas such as Ukhrul and Senapati. Protests were reported from multiple locations in Imphal, including Uripok and Nagaram.

Women’s group Meira Paibis has called a five-day shutdown to protest the April 7 bomb attack in Tronglaobi, Bishnupur district, where two children were killed and their mother injured.

Subsequent protests turned violent, with three people killed and around 30 others injured after clashes between protesters and security forces. Additional clashes during a torch rally in Thangmeiband also left six people injured, including three CRPF personnel.
