Bhubaneswar: Water is not just a necessity but a metaphor for life, growth, and transformation in many cultures and philosophies. Water is the essence of life. Even the smallest blade of grass cannot thrive without it. Wherever water flows, life flourishes. Yet, the careless misuse of this liquid gold threatens the well-being of the upcoming generations.
Covering about 71.4% of our Earth's surface, water is the most precious gift from nature, replenished by rainfall that nourishes life. Its importance to all living beings cannot be overstated. Alarmingly, projections suggest that by 2029, over half of the global population may face insufficient access to water.
With the approval of the United Nations, every year, March 22 is observed as World Water Day. The purpose of this day is to create public awareness about the importance of water conservation and the need for access to clean and safe water in all developed countries, globally.
The decision to celebrate World Water Day was first made during the "Environment and Development Conference" held by the United Nations in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992. Eventually, this decision received approval from the United Nations General Assembly, in 1993. Focused at increasing public awareness about the necessity of clean and safe water, March 22 became an annual event to address the water crisis.
Water is essential for the future of humanity, making its conservation a duty of every individual. It plays a crucial role in the prosperity of any country. Water resources distinctively contribute to agriculture, industry, and transportation. Developed nations protect and manage their water resources effectively, while many poorer countries face water scarcity, affecting their industrial growth.
The amount of water resources available in a place depends on rainfall. But it is also influenced by various other factors. Life itself is connected to water, it sustains forests, mountains, wildlife, and every moment of our existence.
Water scarcity has emerged in many parts of the world, due to population growth, including nations and states. By 2050, water shortages are projected to intensify if current usage patterns continue. Some regions of our state already face potable water crises.
