Riyadh, Mar 3: The United States Embassy in Riyadh was struck by two drones late Monday night, causing a fire and material damage to the compound, Saudi Arabia’s defence ministry said early Tuesday.
In a post on X, the ministry stated that an initial assessment confirmed the embassy premises had been hit by two drones, resulting in a blaze. No injuries were reported as the building was unoccupied during the early morning hours.
The incident comes amid rapidly escalating hostilities in the Middle East, triggered by US- and Israeli-led strikes on Iran that began on February 28, followed by retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Tehran targeting US and Israeli-linked assets across the Gulf region.
Embassy Issues Advisory; Verification Pending
A viral video circulating on social media purportedly shows flames and thick smoke billowing from the embassy compound as emergency services responded. However, independent verification of the footage remains pending.
According to reports, Reuters said it could not independently confirm the exact circumstances surrounding the embassy strike. An official spokesperson for the US Embassy had not responded to media queries at the time of reporting.
Shortly after the incident, the embassy issued a “shelter in place” advisory for American citizens in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran, urging them to avoid visiting the mission until further notice.

Trump Warns of Retaliation
US President Donald Trump warned of a response to the attack. Speaking in an interview with NewsNation, he said, “You’ll find out soon what the retaliation will be,” referring to both the embassy strike and reported casualties among US military personnel during the ongoing confrontation.
Regional Airspace Disruptions Continue
The strike occurred against the backdrop of intensified exchanges between Iran and US-Israeli forces, marking the fourth consecutive day of military escalation in the region.
While Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport remains operational, air travel across the Gulf has been severely disrupted. Several neighbouring countries have temporarily closed or restricted their airspace following the outbreak of hostilities.

Flight-tracking platform Flightradar24 showed large portions of airspace over Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Israel, Bahrain, the UAE and Qatar virtually empty as of Monday. Many Gulf airports and airlines have suspended normal operations until at least Tuesday afternoon, although limited special flights have resumed from the UAE.
Saudi authorities have not clarified whether the drones were intercepted or how they managed to breach air defences over the capital. The Saudi government media office has yet to provide additional details.
The evolving situation continues to heighten concerns over a broader regional conflict, with diplomatic channels yet to indicate signs of de-escalation.
