BRICS Summit / UN Chief Antonio Guterres Arrives in New Delhi for 18th BRICS Summit

New Delhi, Sept 11: United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres arrived in New Delhi on Friday to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit, underscoring the grouping’s emphasis on multilateralism and constructive dialogue. His visit comes as India, holding the BRICS chair in 2026, prepares to host leaders from member and partner countries over the weekend.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Guterres’ presence reaffirms the shared commitment of BRICS partners to peace, development, and international cooperation. This marks his fifth visit to India and second this year, following his participation in the AI Action Summit in February. He was received at the airport by Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar.

BRICS comprises Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates, with partner countries including Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

According to UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, Guterres will deliver a message of support for BRICS, noting that today’s economic and geopolitical realities differ significantly from those of 1945, when many global institutions were created. He is expected to call for reforms of multilateral bodies such as the UN Security Council and the Bretton Woods system to reflect contemporary multipolar realities.

In his address on “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth”, Guterres is likely to stress that multipolarity can help balance global systems, provided institutions are reformed to meet present challenges.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” as the theme of the summit. Guterres will also hold bilateral meetings with Modi and other leaders during the two‑day event.
