Bhubaneswar, Sep 16: World Ozone Day is observed every year on
September 16. This day aims to raise awareness about the protection
shield in the Earth's stratosphere. The layer is composed of a high
concentration of ozone molecules.
Nestled at about 10-50 kilometres, above the Earth's surface, it
absorbs the Sun's harmful UV (ultraviolet radiation) rays. Without it,
exposures to intense UV rays would lead to catastrophic consequences,
including a surge in skin cancers and cataracts in humans, reduced
agricultural yields, and disruption of marine ecosystems, particularly
phytoplankton, which form the base of the oceanic food web.
The day commemorates the signing of the landmark Montreal Protocol in 1987 on substances
that deplete the Ozone Layer. This global treaty
was a direct response to the discovery of a massive "ozone hole" over
Antarctica, primarily caused by man-made chemicals like
CFCs(chlorofluorocarbons), used in refrigerants, aerosols, and
solvents.

The protocol stands as one of the most successful environmental agreements in history. Mandating the phase-out of ozone-depleting
substances (ODS), has led to a significant recovery of the ozone layer.
However, the work is not over. The protocol has also had a crucial
climate benefit, as many ODS are potent greenhouse gases like CFCs and
HFCs.
The theme for World Ozone Day 2025 is "From Science to Global
Action". It serves as a critical reminder of the need to protect and
conserve the ozone layer, ensuring a healthier planet for the future
generations. Continued vigilance and collective effort will help
achieve the mission to protect Earth's atmosphere.
