Beijing, May 30: New satellite imagery has revealed a massive expansion of Chinese military infrastructure in the country’s remote western desert, raising alarm among global security analysts.

The images, reviewed by Reuters, show more than 80 launch pads, fortified bunkers, airfields, rail links, and unusual octagon-shaped facilities near China’s nuclear missile silo fields in Xinjiang. Experts believe the network is designed to strengthen Beijing’s second-strike capability — ensuring China could retaliate even if its nuclear arsenal were targeted in a first strike.

The development comes amid heightened tensions between China and the United States over Taiwan, alongside growing scrutiny of President Xi Jinping’s sweeping military modernisation drive. Analysts warn that the scale of construction signals Beijing’s intent to bolster its nuclear deterrence posture at a time of increasing geopolitical friction.

Despite the April ceasefire halting active fighting in the region, the expansion of nuclear infrastructure has continued. Security experts say the facilities could provide redundancy and resilience, making China’s nuclear forces harder to neutralise in any potential conflict.
