New Delhi, Jul 3: In a landmark moment for India-Ghana relations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Ghana’s highest national honour, the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, by President John Dramani Mahama.
The award recognises Modi’s distinguished statesmanship and influential global leadership, marking a significant diplomatic milestone during his historic state visit to the West African nation.
Taking to X, PM Modi wrote, “Honoured to be conferred with ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’." He added that the honour is dedicated to the bright future of our youth, their aspirations, our rich cultural diversity and the historical ties between India and Ghana.
“This honour is also a responsibility; to keep working towards stronger India-Ghana friendship. India will always stand with the people of Ghana and continue to contribute as a trusted friend and development partner," he added.
Thanking the people and government of Ghana for the special gesture, the Prime Minister noted that the "shared democratic values and traditions of the two countries would continue to nurture the partnership".
He said the award "further deepens the friendship between the two countries and places new responsibility on him to embrace and advance bilateral ties." Modi asserted his confidence that his "historic" state visit to Ghana would impart a new momentum to India-Ghana ties, according to the MEA.
The ceremony took place in Accra, where Modi and President Mahama held wide-ranging talks that elevated bilateral ties to a comprehensive partnership. This visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in over three decades, and is the opening leg of Modi’s five-nation diplomatic tour.
As part of the visit, India announced plans to support Ghana’s development initiatives, including the establishment of a Skill Development Centre, expansion of ITEC and ICCR scholarships, and collaboration on Ghana’s Feed Ghana agricultural programme.
Notably, the Prime Minister is in Ghana on the first leg of his five-nation tour.
