Moscow, May 18: A youth from Odisha’s Ganjam district was reportedly killed in a drone attack amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, a source said Monday.

The deceased was identified as A Rameya, a resident of Madhabandha village under Chikiti block in Ganjam district. He had reportedly travelled to Russia around a month ago in search of work opportunities.

According to the source, Rameya died in a drone strike in Moscow linked to the continuing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The news triggered grief and shock in his native village after family members were informed about the incident.

District Administration In Touch With Indian Embassy

Confirming the death, Ganjam Collector Keerthi Vasan V said discussions are currently underway with the Indian Embassy regarding the matter.

The district administration is also making efforts to bring back the mortal remains of the deceased youth to Odisha, the Collector added.

Massive Drone Attack Reported In Moscow Region
The incident comes amid one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks reported in the Moscow region in recent months.

Russian officials said at least three people were killed and several others injured during overnight drone strikes targeting areas around Moscow.

According to Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobiev, a woman died in Khimki, north of Moscow, while another man and woman were killed in the village of Pogorelki. Several houses were also damaged during the strikes.

Russian authorities said air defence systems intercepted hundreds of drones during the attack.

Indian Citizen Killed, Three Injured: Embassy
India’s embassy in Moscow reportedly stated that one Indian citizen was killed and three others were injured in the attacks, though it was not immediately clear whether the casualties matched those reported by Russian officials.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said drones also struck an entrance to the city’s oil refinery, injuring multiple people and damaging nearby residential buildings.
Russia’s military claimed that 556 drones were intercepted across the country, including around 130 in the Moscow region.

Ukraine Calls Attacks 'Justified Response'

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky described the strikes as an “entirely justified” response to recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Ukraine’s state security service reportedly claimed responsibility for targeting several oil facilities and a semiconductor plant in the Moscow region, along with air defence systems in Crimea.

The latest escalation comes as the Russia-Ukraine war, launched by Vladimir Putin in 2022, continues with intensified drone and missile attacks by both sides.
