North Korea Tests High-Thrust Solid-Fuel Missile Engine Amid Global Tensions
Kim Jong Un Observes Missile Engine Test

Key Points

North Korea has carried out a test of a new solid-fuel missile engine with a maximum thrust of 2,500 kilonewtons, surpassing its previous record of 1,971 kilonewtons. The test, personally overseen by Kim Jong Un, is being described as a major step in strengthening the country’s strategic military capabilities.
North Korea, Mar 29: North Korea has announced the successful test of an upgraded solid-fuel rocket engine, marking a significant step in its ongoing weapons development program. According to the country’s state-run media, the new engine achieved a maximum thrust of 2,500 kilonewtons, surpassing the 1,971 kilonewtons reported during a similar test in September. The test was personally overseen by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who described the development as a strategic enhancement of the nation’s military capabilities.

The engine utilizes carbon-fiber composite technology, designed to increase efficiency and durability. Analysts suggest that the advancement is part of Pyongyang’s broader effort to strengthen its arsenal of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of reaching the U.S. mainland. Solid-fuel missiles are particularly concerning for defense experts because they can be launched more quickly than liquid-fuel variants, making them harder to detect and intercept.

This test comes at a time of heightened global tension, with the United States already engaged in conflict in the Middle East. North Korea’s move is seen as a direct challenge to Washington, with Kim Jong Un accusing the U.S. of “state terrorism and aggression” in relation to its foreign policy. The timing underscores Pyongyang’s determination to project strength and reinforce its nuclear posture.

Experts at the Korea Institute for National Unification noted that the test reflects North Korea’s ambition to develop missiles capable of striking targets worldwide. The increased thrust could allow for multiple warheads to be mounted on a single missile, potentially overwhelming U.S. missile defense systems.

North Korea has conducted several ICBM tests in recent years, many of which demonstrated potential reach to the continental United States. The latest development signals that Pyongyang is not only maintaining but accelerating its weapons program, despite international sanctions and diplomatic setbacks. While Kim has hinted at possible negotiations if Washington eases its denuclearization demands, the continued testing suggests that North Korea is prioritizing military strength over diplomacy.
