Bhubaneshwar, May 1: May 1st marks International Workers’ Day, a global celebration recognizing the struggles, achievements, and contributions of workers in every industry. Also known as May Day, this occasion highlights the ongoing fight for fair wages, safe working conditions, and the dignity of labor.

The roots of this historic day trace back to the late 19th century, when labor movements across the world rallied for an eight-hour workday. The Haymarket affair of 1886 in Chicago became a symbol of workers’ resistance and sacrifice, ultimately leading to May 1st becoming a day of solidarity and reflection for working-class communities worldwide.

In India, Workers’ Day was first celebrated in 1923 in Chennai, then known as Madras, by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan. Since then, labor unions and worker organizations across the country have continued their fight for equitable wages, safer workplaces, and better rights for employees in various sectors.
