Madrid, Apr 28: Several regions in Spain, Portugal and France were hit by a widespread power outage on Monday. However, the exact cause of the outage was not known immediately, but electricity operator says it could last from six to 10 hours.

The power outage affected road, rail and air traffic, out subway networks, phone lines, traffic lights and ATM machines, causing chaos in the region.

According to the Portuguese electricity operator, they said the outage was caused by a "rare" atmospheric phenomenon, related to variations in temperatures.

Shops and restaurants in the Spanish capital were plunged into darkness.

Andorra and parts of France were also hit, said reports.
