US Secretary of State Marco Rubio begins his four-day India visit, meeting PM Modi today ahead of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi.
New Delhi, May 23:US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Kolkata on Saturday morning, kicking off his four-day official visit to India. This marks Rubio’s first trip to the country since assuming office last year. He was welcomed by senior officials and is scheduled to travel to Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi during the visit.

According to US Ambassador Sergio Gor, Rubio will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day in New Delhi. Gor, in a post on social media platform X, wrote: “Honored to welcome my friend Sec Rubio to India! We have an ambitious agenda ahead, including the Quad Foreign Ministers Meeting, focused on advancing POTUS’ vision for an even stronger US-India partnership.”

Rubio’s itinerary includes bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday, followed by participation in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on May 26. The Quad session will bring together Rubio, Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi at the invitation of Jaishankar. Discussions are expected to focus on the Indo-Pacific, defense cooperation, trade, energy security, and regional stability.

Ahead of his visit, Rubio emphasized Washington’s intent to expand energy ties with India and deepen coordination through the Quad. He described India as a “great ally” and “great partner” amid global supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to reporters in Miami before departure, Rubio said: “We wanna sell them as much energy as they’ll buy. Obviously, you’ve seen, I think we’re at historic levels of US production and US export. We wanna be able to do more.”

It is an important trip. I’m glad we’re able to do it because I think there’ll be a lot for us to talk about.”

The Secretary of State also highlighted the significance of the Quad grouping, stressing that the upcoming meeting in New Delhi would be crucial for advancing shared goals in the Indo-Pacific.
