India and the UAE have deepened their strategic partnership with a major energy deal allowing up to 30 million barrels of UAE crude to be stored in India, strengthening energy security for both nations.
Dubai, May 16: India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) significantly expanded their energy partnership following high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi.
The discussions on Friday resulted in a key agreement allowing the UAE to store up to 30 million barrels of crude oil in India’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve, marking a major step in energy cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement between Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL) and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is aimed at enhancing energy security and strengthening emergency oil storage capacity. Both sides also agreed to explore strategic gas storage in India and expand long-term LPG supply arrangements through Indian Oil Corporation and ADNOC.
Calling the UAE a crucial partner in India’s energy security, officials said the two nations are working toward a broader energy collaboration covering crude oil, LNG, and LPG, reflecting growing interdependence amid global energy uncertainty.
Beyond energy, the visit also led to around USD 5 billion in UAE investments across banking, infrastructure, and financial services, along with new cooperation in defence, maritime security, shipbuilding, and advanced technology.
