From ₹5 to ₹2,300: How Gaza’s Food Crisis Turned Parle-G into a Luxury

Key Points

A viral post reveals the shocking price surge of Parle-G biscuits in Gaza.

The viral social media post by Gaza resident Mohammed Jawad highlighted the crisis.

Jawad’s post, featuring his daughter holding the biscuit, resonated globally.

Bhubaneswar, Jun 6: In war-torn Gaza, a staple Indian biscuit, Parle-G, has become a luxury item, selling for an astonishing ₹2,300 per packet. The ongoing conflict has led to extreme food shortages, forcing residents to pay exorbitant prices for basic necessities.

A viral social media post by Gaza resident Mohammed Jawad highlighted the crisis when he shared that he had to buy a packet of Parle-G for €24 (₹2,342) — a staggering increase from its usual price of ₹5 in India.

Jawad’s post, featuring his daughter holding the biscuit, resonated globally, drawing attention to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.

Food Prices Skyrocket Amid Blockade

The crisis extends beyond biscuits. Essential commodities such as sugar (₹4,914 per kg), cooking oil (₹4,177 per litre), potatoes (₹1,965 per kg), and onions (₹4,423 per kg) have seen unprecedented price hikes. The ongoing blockade has severely restricted food supplies, leaving civilians desperate for aid.

Black Market Profiteering Worsens Crisis

Despite international efforts to send humanitarian aid, reports indicate that food supplies meant for free distribution are being hoarded and sold at exorbitant prices. The blockade has created a thriving black market where profiteers exploit the scarcity, making survival even harder for ordinary citizens.
