Announcing the award in Stockholm, the Academy praised the
76-year-old writer “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful
dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary
literature.”
Carson becomes the 19th woman to receive the prestigious
literary honour since the Nobel Prize in Literature was first awarded.

Among her most celebrated books are Eros the Bittersweet (1986), Autobiography of Red (1998), Men in the Off Hours (2000), and The Beauty of the Husband (2001). Her writing has been praised for its intellectual depth, lyrical precision and innovative approach to storytelling.
Favourite Among Contenders
Carson had long been considered a strong contender for the Nobel Prize. In the days leading up to the announcement, literary observers and bookmakers frequently named her among the favourites, alongside Chinese experimental writer Can Xue.

Australian novelist Gerald Murnane, Japanese author Haruki Murakami, American
novelist Thomas Pynchon, Argentine writer César Aira and Indian novelist Amitav

Prestigious Recognition
The Nobel Prize in Literature remains one of the world's highest literary distinctions. The award carries a prize amount of 12 million Swedish kronor (approximately Rs11.5 crore).
The honour follows last year's award to Hungarian novelist László Krasznahorkai, whose work was celebrated by the Academy for its visionary power and its affirmation of art amid apocalyptic uncertainty.
Carson will formally receive the Nobel diploma, medal and prize money at the annual Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm in December.
