Hanoi, Jul 11: At least 15 Indian tourists were killed after a speedboat capsized near Vietnam's Phu Quoc Island on Saturday, according to Vietnamese media reports.
The boat was carrying 32 Indian passengers and four crew members when the accident took place off the coast of Phu Quoc Island in southern Vietnam. Search and rescue operations were underway at the time of filing this report.

The Indian Embassy in Vietnam said it is closely monitoring the situation and is coordinating with local authorities.
"In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists has capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam a few hours ago. Exact details of the incident are being ascertained as search and rescue operations by local authorities are ongoing," the embassy posted on X.

Rescue Efforts Hampered By Rough Sea
Local authorities launched a rescue operation soon after the speedboat overturned. Several nearby tourist boats also joined the rescue.
A boat operator reported that his vessel reached the spot within five minutes. But the operation was difficult as some passengers were trapped inside the capsized boat.
"Only a few people were brought out conscious," the operator said.
Reports said sea conditions off An Thoi were rough at the time. There was no rainfall, but tourist boats were still operating in the area.
Similar Tragedy Last Year
This incident occurred nearly a year after another major boating accident in Vietnam. In July 2025, a tourist boat carrying 48 people, including at least 20 children, capsized in Ha Long Bay during a sudden storm. At least 35 people died in that tragedy.

That accident had raised serious concerns about maritime safety and emergency preparedness at Vietnam’s popular tourist destinations.
