New Delhi,june 3: World Bicycle Day was marked across India on Wednesday with cyclothons, rallies, and awareness events promoting cycling as a healthy and sustainable lifestyle choice. Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya urged the youth to embrace cycling beyond the annual celebration, stressing its role in fitness, mental well-being, and environmental conservation.
In a video message, Mandaviya said, “Cycling is not just an exercise for a day or a hobby; it reflects a healthy lifestyle. It helps keep us healthy and ensures both our mental and physical well-being. Cycling is also a sustainable option that supports environmental conservation.” He linked the practice to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for fuel conservation.
Events were held nationwide, including in Gujarat’s Rajkot where the Rajkot Cycle Club promoted fitness and eco-awareness. Participants shared personal stories, with one cyclist explaining how cycling helped him overcome depression after his father’s passing. Another rider highlighted the practicality of using bicycles for short trips and errands instead of cars.

In Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah flagged off a cyclothon, while Sports Minister Satish Sharma emphasized cycling as a tool to combat drug abuse among youth. Advisor Nasir Aslam noted that such events also boost tourism and promote sports culture in the region.
In Delhi, BYCS India Foundation organized a rally in Hauz Khas, connecting more than 55 cities through its Bicycle Mayors initiative. CEO Bhairavi Joshi praised the growing cycling advocacy movement, while health experts and cycling leaders reiterated the importance of bicycles in building healthier communities and reducing carbon emissions.
