Key Points

Union Minister Amit Shah has declared Amul’s sugar-free chocolate the number one selling sugar-free chocolate in India, as Amul’s chocolate business crosses ₹1,400 crore annually. Experts highlight health benefits of chocolate, including heart health, brain boost, stress relief, and antioxidant power.
New Delhi, May 18: Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah recently declared that Amul’s sugar-free chocolate is the number one selling sugar-free chocolate in India. Speaking at the inauguration of Madhur Dairy’s new plant in Gandhinagar, Shah described the achievement as a milestone for the cooperative brand.

While Shah did not disclose specific sales figures, Jayan Mehta, Managing Director of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), later confirmed that Amul’s chocolate business has crossed ₹1,400 crore in annual sales, registering nearly 50 percent growth last year. Amul is also the market leader in India’s dark chocolate category, with sugar-free dark chocolate contributing almost 10 percent of total chocolate sales.

Over the years, Amul has steadily expanded its chocolate portfolio to nearly 35 varieties, including milk, dark, white, single-origin, wafer chocolates, and filled bars. The company’s strong presence in the sugar-free and dark chocolate segments has helped it capture a growing consumer base seeking healthier indulgences.

At the same event, Shah also inaugurated Madhur Dairy’s new milk processing facility, built at a cost of ₹128 crore on 15 acres in Dashela village, Gandhinagar. The plant has a capacity to process 2.5 lakh litres of milk daily, expandable to 5 lakh litres, with Madhur Dairy currently reporting an annual turnover of ₹628 crore.

Beyond business, experts continue to highlight the health benefits of chocolate, particularly dark and sugar-free varieties. Flavonoids in cocoa improve blood circulation, reduce blood pressure, and lower the risk of heart disease. Chocolate also boosts brain health by increasing blood flow, enhancing memory, and improving concentration. It stimulates endorphins and serotonin, reducing stress and uplifting mood, while antioxidants protect the body from free radical damage.

For those looking to enjoy sugar-free chocolate creatively, easy recipes include sugar-free chocolate mug cake, banana smoothie, and energy balls made with oats, nuts, and cocoa powder. These dishes combine indulgence with nutrition, making chocolate a versatile treat for health-conscious consumers.

With Amul leading the sugar-free chocolate market and expanding its portfolio, Shah’s remarks underscore the cooperative’s growing influence in India’s food and beverage sector, blending tradition with modern consumer demands.
