UPSC Historic Step / UPSC Prelims 2026 Answer Key: Date, Objection Process, and What it Means for Candidates

Key Points
Bhubaneswar: Nearly after over eight months disclosing in Supreme Court, UPSC Monday announced of releasing provisional answer key for 2026 Civil Services Preliminary Examination soon after the conduct of the examination.
Terming it as new beginning, UPSC chairman Dr Ajay Kumar said, “For the first time, the Union Public Service Commission will release the Provisional Answer Key for the Civil Services Examination. This initiative reflects the Commission’s ongoing endeavour to bring greater transparency, responsiveness, and timely communication with candidates”.
He further added, “The policy aims to make the examination process more participative while upholding its sanctity, integrity, and merit-based framework.”
The Backdrop to This Decision
Year 2024: A petition was filed by advocates Saroj Tripathy and Rajeev Dubey in the Supreme Court, emphasising the need for greater transparency, timely access to evaluation materials, and a reduction in unnecessary litigation.
The apex court appointed Senior advocate Jaideep Gupta as Amicus curiae, assisted by Advocate Pranjal Kishore.
Amicus Curiae submitted to the SC that UPSC should release the provisional answer key a day after the prelims exam.
Year 2025: In May 13 affidavit, UPSC termed the suggestion “counter Productive” and warned it could cause “uncertainty and delay in finalisation of the exam.”
However, after SC observations, the UPSC submitted an affidavit in September agreeing to release provisional answer keys shortly after the preliminary examination. The Supreme Court formally appreciated and recorded its satisfaction with this policy shift in October 2025.
The Process
UPSC will release the provisional answer key soon after the exam. It will then allow a period (time window) for the candidates to raise objections.
The objection window will be for candidates who appeared in the exam. The rules for raising objections are:
· Each objection must be backed by three authoritative sources
· Unsupported objections will be rejected at the threshold
· UPSC will decide whether the submitted sources are valid.
After that, the country’s premier central recruiting agency will set an expert committee for review.
The team of subject experts will then decided on
· Accuracy of answers
· Validity of references
· Ambiguities in questions
· Alternative interpretations
· The vetted and corrected answer key will determine the prelim results.
