Rourkela, June 20: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela marked a proud milestone today as it celebrated its 22nd Convocation, awarding degrees to 2,065 graduating students, including 457 women and 93 international students.


The ceremony was graced by Uday A. Kaole, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited, as Chief Guest.


Delivering an inspiring address, Kaole encouraged the graduates to embrace the next chapter of their lives with integrity, accountability, and purpose, emphasizing the role of education in national progress. “You are stepping into a world of infinite possibilities—make it count,” he said.


The event also featured a virtual address by S. N. Subrahmanyan, Chairman of the Board of Governors, who urged students to become “architects of change” in a world shaped by AI and emerging technologies. Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao, Director of NIT Rourkela, presented the Director’s Report, highlighting the institute’s academic achievements and future vision.


Degrees were conferred across a wide range of programs:

- Bachelor of Technology: 1,061 students

- Bachelor of Architecture: 21

- B.Tech.–M.Tech. Dual Degree: 39

The institute also celebrated a notable rise in female graduates, with women comprising over 22% of the graduating class, including 208 in bachelor’s programs, 186 in master’s, and 63 in PhD programs.


A key highlight was the graduation of 93 international students from countries including the USA, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Nepal, along with 25 Non-Resident Indian (NRI) students.


To honor academic excellence, the institute awarded 8 Institute Gold Medals, 6 Endowment Gold Medals, 7 Endowment Awards, and 59 Silver Medals to branch toppers.


Prof. Rao also spotlighted NIT Rourkela’s growing national and global stature, citing its 19th rank in Engineering and 1st among NITs in the THE Asia Rankings. He announced the institute’s continued leadership in national initiatives like CSAB 2025 and DASA 2025, and its selection as a hub institution under the ANRF PAIR program.


With 20 academic departments and a diverse portfolio of programs—including Artificial Intelligence, Food Processing, Biomedical Engineering, and Life Sciences—NIT Rourkela continues to shape future-ready professionals and global citizens.
