Crime in Odisha / Umerkote ATM Loot Shocks Town, Six Miscreants on Run

Umerkote, Jul 24: Nabarangpur district’s Umerkote town witnessed a sensational ATM loot incident that has raised serious questions about urban security. Six miscreants targeted the State Bank of India ATM located on Kondagaon Road.

Using gas cutters, they broke open the machine and fled with cash. CCTV footage captured the gang arriving in a white car, while they sprayed black paint on nearby cameras to destroy evidence.

The exact amount looted is yet to be confirmed. Police and a scientific team have begun investigation, analysing CCTV footage and intensifying searches to nab the culprits.

This daring incident in a busy town has shocked residents, highlighting vulnerabilities in ATM security. Police sources said the gang’s modus operandi suggests professional planning, and efforts are underway to track their movements.

Meanwhile, temple thefts in Borigumma in Koraput district have become a matter of concern. Recently, miscreants looted silver ornaments worth lakhs from Maa Dangar Dei temple in Kamara.

Just a day later, Bhairav temple in Borigumma was targeted, with cash stolen from the donation box. CCTV footage confirmed the theft, sparking outrage among locals and priests.

In another case, Rayagada district’s Kashi Bishweshwar Shiva temple at Rayat Colony faced an attempted theft. Late at night, miscreants tried to break the temple gate lock and donation box but failed.

The incident was discovered by the priest the next morning, who immediately informed police. Investigations are ongoing.

The spate of crimes — from ATM loots to temple thefts — has created fear among residents across southern Odisha.

With public anger mounting, the police response in the coming days will be crucial in restoring confidence.
