Bhubaneswar, Sep 11: Amid heightened activity ahead of the festive season, two passengers were robbed after withdrawing cash from ATMs near the railway station area in Bhubaneswar, with more than Rs 50,000 looted in the two incidents, a source said on Friday.
The complaints raised concerns over the safety of passengers in the busy railway station area, with the victims alleging that groups of men targeted them immediately after they stepped out of ATMs.
Both incidents were reported in the morning and have been reported to Kharavela Nagar police station in Bhubaneswar.
Passengers Targeted After ATM Withdrawals
According to the complaint, Parsuram Karan had come to the railway station to see off his daughter. He went to an ATM to withdraw cash and took out Rs 20,000.
The complaints raised concerns over the safety of passengers in the busy railway station area, with the victims alleging that groups of men targeted them immediately after they stepped out of ATMs.
Both incidents were reported in the morning and have been reported to Kharavela Nagar police station in Bhubaneswar.
Passengers Targeted After ATM Withdrawals
According to the complaint, Parsuram Karan had come to the railway station to see off his daughter. He went to an ATM to withdraw cash and took out Rs 20,000.

Karan alleged that as soon as he came out of the ATM, a group of around seven to eight people attacked him and fled with the cash.
“I went to the ATM to withdraw some cash for my daughter. I withdrew Rs 20,000 from the ATM. As I came outside the ATM, a group of 7-8 people attacked me and took away the cash,” Karan said.
In the second incident, Ganeswar Mahanta was allegedly targeted while withdrawing money for an urgent medical requirement.
Mahanta said he already had Rs 5,000 in cash and went to the ATM to withdraw another Rs 25,000. He alleged that six to seven men assaulted him immediately after he stepped out of the ATM and took away Rs 30,000.
“I had Rs 5,000 cash with me. I went to the ATM to withdraw Rs 25,000. However, the moment I stepped out of the ATM, around 6-7 men assaulted me and robbed Rs 30,000 from me,” Mahanta said.

Police Begin Investigation
The complaints have prompted the Commissionerate Police to begin an investigation into the incidents. Police are expected to examine available CCTV footage and other evidence to identify those involved.
