Bhopal/Madhya Pradesh, May 30: Former district judge Giribala Singh appeared before the Bhopal District Court on Friday as an accused in the alleged dowry death of her daughter-in-law, actor-model Twisha Sharma. Singh, who retired as Principal District Judge in February 2023, was brought to court by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) along with her son, Samarth Singh, Twisha’s husband.

The high-profile appearance drew intense attention within the court complex, with lawyers, litigants, and staff gathering to witness the proceedings. Samarth Singh was escorted first, followed by Giribala Singh under heavy security. Inside Magistrate Shobhana Bhalawe’s courtroom, both stood in the dock during a two-hour hearing.

Throughout the proceedings, the 65-year-old former judge remained composed, interacting with her lawyers and son. At times, she explained points to her counsel or responded with gestures. Despite the gravity of the case, faint smiles occasionally appeared as she spoke to Samarth and her legal team.

Following arguments, the court granted the CBI five days’ custody of Giribala and Samarth Singh for further interrogation. The case stems from Twisha Sharma’s death on May 12, just months after her marriage. Her family accused her husband and mother-in-law of harassment and dowry-related cruelty, alleging persistent demands and mental pressure.

Initially probed by a Special Investigation Team of Bhopal Police, the case was later handed over to the CBI amid public outcry. Samarth Singh was arrested earlier this week, while Giribala Singh was taken into custody after questioning on Thursday evening.

The courtroom scenes marked a dramatic reversal for Giribala Singh, who once presided over the same corridors of justice but now faces trial as an accused in one of Bhopal’s most closely watched cases.
