Bhubaneswar/Kataka, Aug 2: A Hyva truck driver was allegedly assaulted and robbed by a group of miscreants near Nalco Square in Bhubaneswar late Saturday night, while in a separate case, police arrested an alleged member of Irani gang in connection with a jewellery theft at a shop in Kataka.

The two incidents are being investigated separately by the Commissionerate Police.

Truck Driver Assaulted, Robbed Near Nalco Square
According to a source, a group of unidentified miscreants intercepted a garbage-laden Hyva truck near Nalco Square in Bhubaneswar late at night before vandalising the vehicle and assaulting its driver.

The attackers allegedly beat up the driver and fled with Rs 10,000 in cash, the source added.

The suspects reportedly escaped in a Maruti Suzuki Baleno car before police arrived.

Following the incident, PCR personnel and several Hyva truck owners searched the area in an attempt to trace the accused.

Police from Maitri Vihar Police Station reached the spot and launched an investigation, examining CCTV footage from the area to identify those involved.

Irani Gang Member Held In Kataka Jewellery Theft Case
In a separate development, Mangalabag Police in Kataka arrested an alleged member of Irani gang in connection with a jewellery theft reported last month.

The accused has been identified as Muktar Ali, a resident of Jonk police station area in Nuapada district.


Police said some of the stolen gold ornaments were recovered from his possession.

Jewellery Shop Targeted By Posing As Customer
According to the investigation, the theft took place on July 15 at a jewellery shop in Bania Sahi under Mangalabag police station limits.

Police alleged that the accused entered the shop posing as a customer before stealing gold ornaments. He had arrived on a motorcycle with another accused, while his brother is alleged to have assisted in the crime.Police said the brother remains absconding, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest him.
